Tristan Ovenden was back in action at the home of Welsh motorsport, Pembrey for the latest round of the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy.
The Witham Motorsport supported driver got off to a great start putting in the second fastest time in qualifying 1 followed up with a solid fifth in qualifying 2 gaining a front row start for the final. An outside grid spot meant coming from the outside, however this meant he was able to avoid the incident in turn one, but left him nearly the whole grid to work through eventually crossing the line in Forth place and in the process recording the third fastest lap time of the final!
After overnight rain the circuit was to be run in the opposite direction, anti-clockwise. The Goody Demolition supported driver was looking to build on the previous day and approached the challenging track conditions cautiously, especially the loose section where grip was virtually non-existent! His consistent lap times earned him a second row start for the final. A thrilling race which saw Ovenden at third place for most of it, only loosing out on the third step of the podium by a mere 2 seconds.
Congratulations go to Patrick O’Donovan who secured his third successive championship. However, second and third places are still undecided with less than 20 points separating the next 4 drivers it will all come down to a thrilling final round at Lydden Hill.
Speaking after the weekend, Ovenden said:”We had a really solid weekend. I’m was very happy with our overall pace on Saturday and of course I’m disappointed not to have got on the podium although there was some consolation in not getting involved in the turn one incident.
“Sunday, we did struggle a little more in the slippery wet conditions and the team worked really hard to come up with a good setting particularly with the start. In the final, we seemed to get it right. A good start and our pace was better. Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite hang onto third, and would always like to be faster, but forth was a fair result given the conditions.’
Will Ovenden was also back in action in the Swift Sport category. With a comfortable championship lead heading into the weekend the young star drove an absolute perfect weekend not only winning both finals but all qualifying heats as well and in the process is one step closure to securing the 2024 Swift Sport title!
