Lee Bowyer was pleased with the character and determination his team showed to come from behind and beat Wycombe on Saturday.
After an indifferent first-half, the Addicks clicked into gear, and scored another two goals after the break to establish a 3-1 lead. Wycombe scored a late goal to reduce the deficit, but Charlton saw the game out without mishap.
Here are Bowyer’s thoughts:
“The most important things is that it’s good to win ugly at times.
“Last week we won and played well, but it won’t always be like that here. Teams are going to come and make things difficult for us so we have to be prepared to keep patient and keep the ball, which we did at times.
“Overall, we deserved to win and we showed the togetherness and character to come from behind. The crowd were getting a bit agitated, but they still showed the determination to go and get the three points which is the most important thing, no matter how you do it.”
The Addicks lost Nicky Ajose and Darren Pratley to injury during the game and it was their replacements – Ben Reeves and George Lapslie – who gave the team the impetus to take the game by the scruff of the neck:
“Reeves did well in the second half. he
“He has the quality to unlock things. Lyle and Karlan were much better in the second half and that was the Lyle Taylor that we signed.
“We were the better side after the break and we deserved to win, but the first-half was disappointing. We just can’t put two halves together at the moment, but it will come,” added Bowyer.
Bowyer had to make three enforced changes to the team that won at Southend last week. But one unenforced change he made was to give the gloves to Jed Steer. Steer’s better distribution was the main reason:
“I watched him (Steer) on Tuesday and knew that Wycombe were going to make it difficult for us and we had to be positive and play out of the back with confidence.
“Jed is better with his feet, he’s a very good passer as we saw today. He was dropping balls into the strikers and that is a very difficult thing to do. He impressed me on Tuesday night and that’s why I brought him in.”
Bowyer may be forced to shuffle his pack again at Bradford on Saturday, with Ajose and Pratley being possible absentees at Valley Parade.
