Charlton took a point from Fortress Oakwell on Saturday. The last time Barnsley were defeated at home was in March 2018, when Millwall inflicted a 2-0 reverse on them.

The Addick have taken a very‎ creditable seven points from their first three games, and the early signs suggest they have adjusted well to life in the Championship.

The fans who were worrying about their team’s chances of surviving at a higher level will be feeling more confident now.

The bookies made Charlton favourites to be relegated‎, but Bowyer says it is up to his team to prove them wrong:

“That’s for everybody else to make their decisions and make their predictions but, for me, I’ve got a group of players in there that’s going to give me 100 per cent, and give this football club 100 per cent, every time they step on the pitch.

“I’m not really worried what other people are saying. I know that they are going to give me that, and if they keep doing that and keep performing like they did today then I think we’d be okay.

“I’ll go with what the bookies are saying and they’re saying that we’ll finish bottom, and if that’s the case, it’s down to us to prove everybody wrong.

“Do I think we’re going to be in the bottom three? No.

“Our aim is to stay out of the bottom three, but if everyone wants to put us in their bottom three then that’s their choice. I’m not going to challenge.”

Team spirit, belief and effort go a long way in football. For sure money is a big help but it is not the be all and end all.

When Huddersfield were promoted in 2017, they had the second smallest budget in the Championship.

Certainly Bowyer believes his team can do better than just survive this season.

The boss has a busy week ahead. As well as preparing his team for two home games – Nottingham Forest on Wednesday and Brentford on Saturday – he will be hoping for a resolution to the Tomer Hemed situation.

Bowyer has already said that latest signing, Erhun Oztumer, is not yet fit enough to be involved in the Forest game.
