Lee Bowyer spoke about the need to rotate the squad last week. Playing Friday, and then Monday, led Bowyer to believe fresh legs would be required.
But the decision to pull the Northampton game forward 24 hours, and play it on Friday, could work in Charlton’s favour. The extra 24 hours recovery time could make the difference.
Here is what Bowyer had to say at his press conference after the Northampton game:
“It will be dangerous for me to leave people out because they’re in a good place. The biggest thing for me is if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. And at the moment it’s not broken.
“I nearly changed something today, but I thought I can’t because the lads had given me everything last Saturday, and to change things would be harsh.
“We had a bit of a longer break in-between games. Now it’s Friday-Monday.”
Bowyer will need to check on the fitness of a few players before he can name his side.
Lewis Page has cramped in the last two games. After such a long time out, it is hardly surprising.
Page has produced two high energy performances recently, and showed the attacking side of his game.
On Friday, he delivered a peach of a cross for Ben Reeves to open the scoring.
Both Jason Pearce and Joe Aribo took knocks at Sixfields. Though they carried on, it is possible they could suffer a reaction over the weekend.
Bowyer was uncetain if he fancied the job on a permanent basis when he was first appointed, but seems to be warming to the task.
He went on to explain that it is a real team effort behind the scenes:
“I didn’t think I’d be standing here doing it but now I am, it’s good, I enjoy it.
“Tactically I look at the game at lot more. It wasn’t my decision how we played before but now I’m more in control and I’m enjoying it.
“Jacko alongside me – he’s been working on the back-four and they look solid. It’s not a coincidence that we haven’t conceded in the last two games.
“He’s been working so hard on their shape and distances. The analysts are putting in overtime. The physio is getting players back.
“Everyone’s working hard to get the results and the fans today were unbelievable. They didn’t stop singing for the whole game.”
Rotherham will probably present the toughest test Bowyer has faced to date. They are in fourth place in the table, leading the pack behind Blackburn, Shrewsbury and Wigan, but have faltered recently.
After going on a 14 match unbeaten run between December and February, the Millers lost their first two games in March, and recorded only one win last month.
Bowyer will be hoping that his side are playing Rotherham at the right time.
