Lee Bowyer shared his thoughts with Valley Pass after Tuesday’s nerve jangling match at Scunthorpe.
Many Addicks fans had to blink twice at the interval, they could hardly believe their team were behind.
But though Charlton looked terrific going forward, they were fragile at the back.
To be fair, when Lewis Page went off, the back four had a very lopsided look to it. Abfernee Dijksteel replaced Page, and slotted into Chris Solly’s right-back berth, with Solly switching to the left.
In Patrick Bauer’s absence, Jasson Pearce played as the right sided central defender. Add in that Naby Sarr and Jed Steer had poor nights, and it is easy to see how problems could occur.
After Saturday’s home clash with Coventry, the Addicks will have a much needed break due to international call-ups.
But Coventry will be a tough nut to crack. Bowyer will be without Page for several weeks, and Darren Pratley will be missing through suspension. Here are Bowyer’s thoughts:
“It was the craziest, most frustrating, disappointing game I’ve been involved in as a manager so far. I’m seeing good things but horrendous things too.
“It’s difficult, I can’t go too mad at the lads because we had been good. We had won four on a spin and now we’ve lost our first one in seven. Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture.
“But tonight we conceded three goals from set-pieces, a penalty decision and obviously they hit us on the break when we were pushing for an equaliser.
“We scored three away from home and scored two on Saturday. You can’t do that and only come away with one point. We’re doing good things in the final third but we just need to stop doing these silly mistakes.”
Bowyer reserved some words of praise for the 221 fans who travelled to North Lincolnshire on a chilly Tuesday evening.
”We’ve got a long drive home thinking about everything that’s happened in the last 90-odd minutes and, our fans, I feel for them as it’s a long way to go on a Tuesday night.”
”All I can do is apologise for tonight and thank them again for the support. They were great. I don’t know what happened defensively but it wasn’t acceptable.”
