Bournemouth 1-0 Charlton Athletic

The big pre-game news was that Bob Peeters had opted to revert to his favoured 4-4-2 shape with young Karlan Ahearne-Grant brought in to partner Igor Vetokele up front.Bournemouth

Elsewhere, Tareiq Holmes-Dennis started for Oxford, former academy player, Semi Ajayi, was on the bench for Arsenal and Forest lost at Cardiff, leaving the Addicks as the last unbeaten Championship team. Regrettably, by the end of the afternoon, Charlton had also surrendered their unbeaten tag.

The Addicks took to the field wearing their garish third strip for the first time.

The only goal of the game came in the second minute. A sloppy cross field pass from Johann Gudmundsson was latched on to by Matt Ritchie. The winger advanced and Stephen Henderson made a fine save from Ritchie’s rasping drive, pushing the ball round the post for a corner.

Corners have been Charlton’s achilles heel this season and they conceded again. The ball eventually came to Marc Pugh on the left, Pugh skipped past Jordan Cousins and delivered the perfect cross for Callum Wilson to tap home and give the Cherries the lead.

Eddie Howe’s team were bright, quick and inventive and really should have been further ahead before the interval.

The visitors’ came closest with a Gudmundsson free-kick after 23 minutes. The Icelandic international’s shot was heading for the top corner before being clawed away by Artur Boruc.

The Addicks had Henderson  and some profligate finishing from Bournemouth to thank for just being a single goal adrift.

Peeters made two substitutions at the break. Johnnie Jackson – who had been booked and was perhaps lucky to escape a second yellow card – and Igor Vetokele, who picked up an ankle knock,  made way for Callum Harriott and Franck Moussa.

Peeters switched to 4-5-1, leaving Ahearne-Grant as the lone striker, a big ask for a 17-year-old.

It was Ahearne-Grant who had Charlton’s first shot of the second period after 74 minutes.

Twelve minutes from time, Andre Bikey was sent forward to join the youngster up front, but to no avail.

The final chance came in stoppage time when a deep cross from Harriott found Lawrie Wilson at the far post, but the substitute’s header was comfortably saved by Boruc.

In truth, the Addicks offered little going forward in the second period.

The secret when an unbeaten run ends is to start another one straight away. Peeters will be looking to do that, starting with Bolton’s visit to The Valley on Tuesday.
