This weekend Welling United are in Vanarama National League South action for just their second Saturday afternoon game of the season when they visit Boreham Wood.
Rod Stringer’s Wings will be very keen to banish memories of their disappointing F.A. exit at home to Chatham Town following their encouraging league win over Torquay United. Against the Chats they looked well in control for the first twenty minutes until Freddie Sears put the visitors ahead. After that, Welling rarely looked like finding the net and the scoreline could have been a lot heavier than one-nil.
There have been interesting events at Boreham Wood. Despite a solid start of three wins, three draws and two defeats, the powers that be have decided that their new manager, Ross Jenkins, should be relieved of his duties. His replacement is Luke Garrard, who the club sacked at the end of last season when they were relegated from the National League.
They were more successful than Welling in the F.A. Cup on Saturday. An impressive one-nil win at Eastbourne Borough, courtesy of a strike by Junior Dixon midway through the second period, gave Garrard a perfect return.
At home they have beaten Bath City and Weymouth before drawing with Maidstone United. However, in their most recent game at Meadow Park, Worthing took away all three points, winning two-one.
Due to the two clubs being in different divisions, Welling haven’t visited Boreham Wood in the league since 2015. They did clash in the F.A. Cup Fourth Qualifying Round last season, though, and it appeared that Welling were going to take them back to Park View Road until former Wing Tyrone Marsh scored the only goal with four minutes remaining.
Stringer is missing a significant number of players from his squad through injury but he refuses to use that as an excuse and he, and assistant manager Kevin Watson, will have the team prepared for the task.
