Jekyll and Hyde Welling United slumped to their second consecutive defeat following a run of four successive victories.
Sadly, they created little and made an ordinary Boreham Wood team look good.
Their cause wasn’t helped by injuries that resulted in the absence of Michael Chambers, Zach Fagan and George Porter however there was sufficient quality in the squad for their travelling supporters to expect better.
Loui Fazakerley always demands a high energy performance but on this occasion Welling were sluggish and were punished after nineteen minutes.
There seemed little danger when Ricky Shakes knocked down a deep cross but Jamie Lucas was allowed time to knock home from close range.
That appeared to rouse them and they dominated the next twenty minutes. Sam Corne shot over, Ricky Wellard had an effort blocked, and Harry Lee’s twenty yarder was fumbled round the post by Wood’s goalkeeper James Russell.
Reece Harris caught Russell in possession but was fouled as he looked to take advantage. Xavier Vidal’s free kick left Russell stranded but hit the outside netting.
Kevin Lokko had a header saved before the hosts finished the half strongly with the two Cliffords coming to the fore. Conor had s shot well saved by Tom King in the Welling goal, but his save when tipping a shot from Billy onto the bar was stunning.
After a promising start to the second period with Harris prominent in most of the best attacks, the hosts came back into the game and Shakes was denied by the feet of King.
On 63 minutes, Boreham Wood scored the all important second goal when Joe Devera scored from Junior Morias’ cross.
Kevin Lokko might have halved the arrears and made for an interesting finish but headed over from Sandro Semedo’s free kick.
Both Cliffords had further opportunities and Harry Osborne was dismissed six minutes from time for bringing down last man Billy.
Fazakerley was not happy with the performance “It comes down to how we started the game. We tell the boys every single game how important it is to start well. Maybe they take this as a bit of throwaway information.”
“We came into this game very positive and confident. We thought we’d come here and win the three points. We just didn’t start well enough.”
