Gillingham striker Macauley Bonne has joined Cambridge United on loan for the remainder of the season.
Bonne lines up with former Gillingham manager Neil Harris at the U’s and could well have played his last game for the Kent club.
Bonne, 28, signed for Gills in the summer of 2023 and scored five times in 31 appearances. His last outing coming at MK Dons last weekend.
He reunites with Harris, who is now in charge at the Abbey Stadium, and the forward could make his debut this weekend against Shrewsbury Town in a League One fixture at The Crowd Meadow.
Bonne came to Gillingham with a big reputation for scoring goals, but failed to live up to those expectations and his end product wasn’t enough.
Often playing a lone role up front, Bonne will be largely remembered for his car accident on Woodlands Road in Gillingham rather than his time scoring goals at Priestfield.
With Bonne off the payroll for the remainder of the campaign, Gillingham seem set to bring in another new face as the transfer window closes at 11pm this evening.
Speaking to the media on Thursday afternoon, Stephen Clemence had few words on the subject of Bonne, but suggested the club were lining up his replacement.
Clemence said: “I wish Macauley Bonne all the very best.”
“I expect you (the media) will have something to write about in the next few hours.”
Meanwhile, both Bonne and Harris had their say on the loan deal.
“He is a manager I have wanted to work with over the years,” Bonne said about linking up with Neil Harris again.
“Now the chance is here for me to work under him again it’s an opportunity I want to pursue. He knows me, he knows my style of play and knows how to get the best out of me. It’s an exciting opportunity for me.”
“I am fit and ready. I am in a good place right now to go and play football and this has come at a good time for me. There is a good group of lads and I feel like I will be a good fit.”
Neil Harris said, “I am delighted to welcome Macauley to the Club. He comes in with a pedigree of playing and scoring at whichever league he has played in. He offers versatility and variety to our front-line, he has played football this year and is fit and ready to go.”
“I think he will compliment Lyle and Elias very, very well and I am really pleased he is now with us.”
