Bolton Wanderers 2-2 Charlton Athletic

The 70 or so Charlton fans who braved the horrors of the M6 would have been happy with what they saw on Friday evening.

All seven of Guy Luzon’s new signings played some part in an entertaining game, with old boys, Lawrie Wilson and Dorian Dervite lining-up for the home side.

El Hadji Ba was again the stand out performer, Cristian Ceballo created Tony Watt’s second goal and Zak Bergdich is lightning fast.

With Johnnie Jackson on the bench, and Chris Solly not involved at all, it was maybe surprising that Jordan Cousins – who has signed a new four year deal – was not given the captain’s armband. As the team’s emerged from separate tunnels, it was Alou Diarra who led the Addicks out.

Charlton were much the brighter early on and had three decent chances before Darren Pratley headed Bolton in front after 24 minutes.

In the fourth minute Tony Watt was in with just the keeper to beat, but shot straight at him.

Two minutes later, Patrick Bauer had a powerful header saved on the lin, and on 19 minutes, following good work by Watt on the left, Ahmed Kashi skied his shot over the bar.

Against the run of play. Darren Pratley glanced a free-kick from the left past Nick Pope, to give the Trotters the lead.

The Addicks got a richly deserved equaliser just before the break when Watt tucked away a tidy finish after being played in by Johann Gudmundsson.

Bolton showed early intent and Liam Feeney capitalised on a defensive mix-up to restore Bolton’s lead just seconds after the restart.

On the the hour mark, Charlton were level again. Cristian Ceballo fed Watt, who scored via the near post.

The hosts had the better of things in the second period and Pope was called upon to make a couple of smart saves towards the end.

It was a good work for both sides and the two managers will be satisfied with what they witnessed. There were good signs, but also things to work on, before the big kick-off.
