Chris Powell went with an attacking 4-4-2 line-up against Bolton. Chris Solly started his first game since August, with Lawrie Wilson pushing into midfield.
Richard Wood came in for Dorian Dervite to add natural balance to the back line and Simon Church returned up front.
The Addicks started brightly and took an early lead. Dale Stephens fed Rhoys Wiggins who crossed for Yann Kermorgant to fire home.
Wilson, relishing his midfield role, spurned a good chance to double the advantage after 17 minutes when he blazed over from close range.
But gradually Bolton clawed their back into the game with Chris Eagles and Chung-Yong Lee looking partcularly dangerous.
The Trotters tested the Charlton rearguard and deflated their visitors when Kevin McNaughton controlled a left-wing cross, then guided the ball past Ben Alnwick.
Bolton had the better of the second half although Kermorgant and Solly tried their luck from range.
In the end, it was a point that the Addicks deserved for their early enterprise.
