Loanee Hull winger, Cameron Stewart, has expressed his desire to stay at The Valley when his current deal ends on 1 January.
Stewart’s contract at Hull runs out in the summer and he is surplus to Steve Bruce’s requirements. A possible stumbling block to a permanent move to The Valley could be if Hull demand a fee for the player. The continuing uncertainty about the club’s future ownership could also prevent a contract being offered at present.
Kansas’ former Norwich striker, Dom Dwyer, is currently training with the Addicks. Whether it is to keep him fit during the MLS close season, or whether Charlton have genuine interest in the player, is unclear.
Chris Powell indicated at his Thursday press conference that Michael Smith will return to the club in January. Smith has notched nine goals for AFC Wimbledon and the Dons are keen to retain his services.
Powell will assess if the striker is ready to step up to the Championship and it is possible he could still return to Kingsmeadow after a couple of weeks back with his parent club.
Powell also indicated that he would have to be ‘creative’ regarding player movement during the January window. It may be a case of loaning players out to free up wages for incoming loanees. Alternatively, short term deals could be offered to out of contract free agents.
Of more immediate concern is Saturday’s trip to the Reebok. Bolton have climbed to 16th spot in the table after a good recent spell of form.
Dougie Freedman plays a 4-5-1 formation and Powell will probably opt to mirror the opposition’s shape. The manager has indicated he may shake things up a bit so changes are likely, possibly to the way the players are deployed.
The experiment of playing Bradley Pritchard in the hole against Derby did not work but Powell is a fan of Pritchard’s work ethic and he could be used in a more traditional central midfield role or be switched to the right. Dogged midfielder, Andy Hughes, may come into contention.
Ben Alnwick will continue in goal but Chris Solly and Richars Wood could come into contention for starting slots.
Yann Kermorgant, though not at his best, is likely to be the lone striker ahead of the more mobile Simon Church. Marvin Sordell can not feature under the terms of his loan deal.
Charlton could look like this:
Alnwick; Wilson, Morrison, Dervite, Wiggins; Pritchard, Hughes, Cousins, Stephens, Stewart; Kermorgant.
Subs: Pope, Solly, Evina, Wood, Green, Harriott, Church, Pigott.
The referee will be Phil Gibbs of the West Midlands.
Another tough task as Powell searches for the winning formula. He will be pleased if he can take a point home with him.
