Danny Bloor claimed his first victory as manager of Welling United in an entertaining pre-season friendly at Beckenham Town.
After the game, he spoke about the previous ninety minutes and how he is looking forward to the season ahead.
On the match itself, he said “I thought it was good in the first half. I thought it was poor in the second half. As I’ve said all along the scorelines in pre-seasons don’t concern me. Just because we’ve won a game, it doesn’t mean I’m going to change my stance on that. I thought that there were some good signs in the first half but I thought that there were some not so good signs in the second half.”
During July, Bloor and his management team have looked at a number of players but have whittled down them down. “We only had three trialists, A, B and C today, and hopefully trialist A will be signed on Monday or Tuesday” he confirmed.
“We need to make decisions on trialists B and C. I’m hopeful that we might get one other player in as well but it’s a long season and there’s plenty of games. Obviously we want to be right for the opener, but we need to be right for the full course of the season.”
Both goals conceded, early in the second half, were as the result of individual mistakes. Bloor admitted “We’ve had a few defensive errors in pre-season but it’s better that those errors are made in pre-season rather than when the proper action starts. We’re learning. I’m learning. The players are learning and the management team is learning.
“We’re a new team. There’s not going to be many of those players who were playing last season in the squad, or even at the club, when we start. It will take a bit of time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but we’re really looking forward to it.”
He continued with praise for Welling’s supporters. “It’s a complete rebuild. A lot’s changed around the club and I’d just like to say how great the fans were today. They were brilliant. They got right behind us and it’s going to be crucial if we’re to do anything this season. Welling United is a fans football club. We have to engage with them. Pre-season’s virtually done now and they’ve been very supportive. The real action starts now. Thanks to them, and it’s very much ‘Up the Wings’.”
