Chances going astray cost Welling United dearly as their three month unbeaten home run ended at the hands of a physical Eastbourne Borough. Danny Bloor, the Welling manager, commented after the game.
“Anyone would see today that we were the better team.” he said. “It’s all about taking your chances and Eastbourne Borough scored with a header from a corner just before half time and they got a second, probably ten minutes into the second half, but other than that, I don’t remember Reice (Charles-Cook, Welling’s goalkeeper) making a save.
“I wouldn’t say we played poorly. Paps (Antony Papadopoulos) came back into the side and I thought that he was really good. We played well but the name of the game is putting the ball into the back of the net.
“Their keeper, Harrison Foulkes, made a fantastic save from Lochie (Lachlan Byrd), a great reflex save. He made a number of other good saves and I’d be pretty sure that he would be Eastbourne Borough man of the match.”
Adam Roscrow came off the substitute’s bench to return to the pitch for the first time since his injury at the start of September.
Bloor said: “I thought that he showed some really good touches. I think that if he’d been a bit sharper, he may have put the ball in the back of the net.”
There is still a problem with injuries to centre-backs though. Bloor said:
“Jack Burchell had a scan on Friday. We haven’t got the result of that. Our bench was pretty light today as well but I don’t make excuses. I take it on the chin like the rest of my management team do.”
“We’re certainly not down. It would have been nice to have got something here, because we deserved something but it’s very much onwards, upwards and forwards.”
Although, Bloor was formerly manager of Eastbourne Borough, that’s in the past.
He confirmed: “All I’m interested in his keeping Welling United moving in the right direction, on and off the pitch, and I love this club. We’ve got fantastic fans who understand.”
“They’ll be disappointed (with the result) but they will go away from Park View Road this (Saturday) evening knowing that their team gave them everything.”
