It took a late goal by Boreham Wood’s Tyrone Marsh to beat Welling United in the F. A. Cup Fourth Qualifying round. After the match Danny Bloor gave his thoughts to Mark Doig.

Bloor’s team were unfortunate not to take the tie to a replay at Welling as they had to overcome a series of obstacles. After the game he gave his views.

“You have to be so proud of the Welling United players.” he said “We’ve come to a National League side who’ve got a fantastic cup pedigree, fantastic manager, fantastic facilities and Luke (Garrard, Boreham Wood’s manager) came up to me afterwards and said ‘you deserved a lot more.’ We had the better chances in the game.”

Events conspired against Welling and Bloor  continued “Everything went wrong for us. We lost Ben Winterbottom, our goalie, injured. Javarn (Pitterson) came on to make his debut. We lost Lewis White to a dislocated shoulder, so everything went wrong for us but we still stuck at it. We had a great spell just after half time when we should have taken the lead. However, we didn’t but we must take the positives as we move on.”

In that spell after half time Jack Burchell came desperately close when hit the post. “We hit the woodwork twice last week but you have to stick together.” continued Bloor. “We’ve got a good side and we need to use this as a launch pad, our good F. A. Cup run, to move up the league.”

Some of Welling’s football on a good playing surface was a joy to watch. “That’s the way we play.” he said. “It’s no surprise to us. We were missing senior players today as well and Ben Winterbottom has gone to hospital so we’ll have to assess that but Javarn came in and certainly acquitted himself very well.”

Bloor also appreciated the fact that 226, out of an attendance of 756 spectators, were Welling supporters. He beamed when saying “They are magnificent. The reception they give me, the reception they gave the boys afterwards but I think they can see. I thought the officiating left a lot to be desired today as well, but they understand football, the Welling fans and some of their chants about the referee were interesting to say the least.”

Finally, he had a word for the hosts when saying “We wish Boreham Wood really well and we’ll be looking at their draw with interest, certainly hoping they have another good season in the F. A. Cup.”
