At the fifth time of asking, Welling United picked up their first win of the season with a deserved victory over Havant and Waterlooville.
After the game, The Wings’ manager, Danny Bloor, gave his comments. “I thought we made hard work of it at the end.” he said. “I thought it was a game that we should have put to bed earlier than we did. Nevertheless, it’s our first win, a massive three points, but let’s not get too excited.
“I’ve not been too down with the defeats. Apart from that first game at Truro, I actually think we’ve been playing very well. It’s quite ironic. I’ve spent all week trying to get a striker in but I was badly let down by one club in particular, we won’t go there, and two of the strikers at the club, Alex MacAllister and that man David Kamara. Seventeen to score that goal, wow. That’s so exciting for me and it’s testament to the hard work that people have put in at Welling United Football Club.”
When Kamara came on, with just under twenty minutes remaining, he proved a real handful, even out-muscling the experienced Havant centre-backs. “Age is just a number.” purred Bloor. “David Kamara is going to be a top, top player. It’s just that over the last couple of games, with Alex MacAllister’s injury, we’ve had to start David.
“You can see the impact he’s going to have from the bench and when you see that smile from David, I feel very, very satisfied this evening, but let’s not get carried away, it’s only the first three points. We need to get some more very quickly.”
Wing-play by Lewis White and Jephte Tanga also gave the Havant defence a harrowing afternoon. Bloor explained “At my previous club I had two very good wingers as well. That’s the way we like to play. It’s been difficult so far as Lewis hasn’t been fit but you can see they give you width, they give you entertainment. We’re an entertaining side. I know we’ve only got three points, lets not get carried away, but it certainly feels a lot better than it did at two o’clock today.”
Although fourteen of his group had some playing time. Bloor was quick to add that those who didn’t play should not be disappointed. He said “It’s a squad game. It’s not about the eleven. I just went into the dressing room and said a massive well done to Taofiq (Olomowewe) and Kareem (Isiaka). Their attitudes were superb today. It’s a squad game and we do need to add one or two to the squad. It doesn’t help having a couple suspended.”
Bloor finished by saying “It’s my first win as Welling United manager. There’s been a lot of hard work this summer. Massive thanks to Garry Fiore, the Director of Football. I’ve worked very closely with him and we can have a beer tonight, let’s enjoy it, but we have to get back tomorrow and prepare for the game on Monday (away to Tonbridge Angels).”
