It was a disappointing afternoon for Welling United in the West Country as they were well beaten at Torquay United. After the game, Danny Bloor did not hold back with his thoughts on his team’s poor showing.
“I felt that other than the first twenty / twenty five minutes, we were absolutely abysmal.” he said.
“I felt that we had players out there who had no commitment, no desire and if they don’t sharpen up quickly, they won’t be playing for me and for Welling United Football Club.”
“Kain Adom is possibly the only player to come out of the game with any credit. We started really well. We were on top but then unfortunately, the penalty but these things happen. What we didn’t have was enough character to deal with it.”
Going back to the penalty, which presented Torquay with the opportunity to equalise, it did appear that the foul was outside the area but Bloor wasn’t interested in looking for excuses. He said “It was given so it’s a penalty isn’t it, but it’s how we react to it. We didn’t.
“After twenty-five minutes we might as well have been on the road home because I felt that’s what the players gave. I felt gutted for the Welling United fans. There was a number of them and I feel gutted for them, all the people that have come down here and they serve up that. Sometimes, the manager and the management team get the criticism and I’ll take any criticism. I’m old enough and ugly enough to accept it, but today the players let all of us down.”
Words were said in the changing room afterwards but Bloor wouldn’t be drawn into details, saying “I won’t be saying what I said in there, that stays in there, but they don’t need to wait (to show a reaction). We’ve got Maidstone United on Tuesday night, another full time side, and we’ve got to learn how to deal with it.”
Bloor felt that that the responsibility on lifting the players should be their own responsibility. He continued “I think they need to pick themselves up. The goalkeeper (James Holden) making his debut gets sent off and Cameron Green gets injured, his ankle doesn’t look good, we don’t have the biggest squad but I’m not making any excuses whatsover. I’m not doing that. What I am doing is apologising to the Welling United fans.
“Other than that first game of the season at Truro, we’ve been alright but that wasn’t good enough today and that’s not what I stand for as a manager, it’s not what my management team stand for and for those players in there, it’s not what the Welling fans deserve.”
Now five points adrift of the safety zone, Welling need to pick up some points but Bloor isn’t worried yet. “I don’t even look at the results, we can only do what we do. All we can do is focus on Tuesday night.”
