It’s always fun to play at home.
Whatever the circumstances and whoever the opposition, playing at home is just fun. You’re playing in front of friends, often in front of family and the majority of people in attendance all want the same thing; a Holcombe win.
There’s an expectation that accompanies playing for a club such as Holcombe and we don’t shy away from it, it just adds to it all.
We were fortunate therefore to have two home games this weekend. For the women, a lunch time start on a Saturday always lead to crowd difficulties. Inevitably, the majority of potential viewers have their own games on a Saturday and the subsequent clashes always result in fewer attendees for an earlier start on a Saturday.
In spite of this, it was a vocal and enthusiastic Terrace that got to witness another professional performance from the girls. Goals from last years’ top scorer, this years’ assistant player/coach and from the returning Captain hit all the right notes against an irrefutably dangerous student side.
Picking up the first win of the season is a great start to the home campaign and sets the stall out for the rest of the years’ games at Holcombe Park.
It’s a big away trip next weekend under difficult circumstances at Buckingham. Another lunchtime start means that support will be limited and it will be up to the girls to be as professional as they were on Saturday to get the job done and get back to Kent with the points.
The men had a tough one to get going on Sunday.
With last weekends’ debacle at East Grinstead, we went into Saturday without a game in three weeks. We knew deep down that we would have it tough against such a strong Beeston side but as everyone present saw, we defended exceedingly well throughout the game and lost out to two shots off target.
We could and should have created the opportunities to get something from a game like that and the overriding feeling is that it’s a missed opportunity. We got to bed in 5 debutants which is a real positive moving forward but with the pace this league moves at, we only have 6 days to sort it out before we’re back at it.
Having never played Sevenoaks in the league before, it’s difficult to know what to expect. They’ve had a tough start to their inaugural Premier League Campaign but being just a mere 30 minutes away, a 6pm game under lights will hopefully draw in a significant crowd for both sides in the first Holcombe-Sevenoaks derby in the National Premier League.
The Women keep on rolling and the Men have got back on the treadmill with a timely reminder of the pace to be running at.
Let’s see how quick we are in seven days…
