Blackpool v Charlton Ath Preview

A few years back, Ian Holloway changed from being a dour, defensively minded coach into one that produced sparkling, attack minded teams.

It is a journey that Chris Powell should consider, the transformation has seen Holloway’s stock soar.

Tomorrow the Addicks pitch up at Bloomfield Road on the day the world famous Blackpool illuminations are turned on, let’s hope Charlton can light up the town too.

Blackpool play a 4-3-3 system, with two wide players cutting in to support the central striker. Behind them is a bank of three central midfielders, marshalled by former Scotland captain, Barry Ferguson.

Blackpool’s attacking flair has seen them beat Leeds 2-1, Ipswich 6-0 and Middlesbrough 4-1 at Bloomfield Road, while Huddersfield won 3-1 in the Tangerines last home encounter.

There has been much discussion about what formation Charlton should adopt for the game with 4-5-1 being touted after the relative success of the system against Blackburn. Tactics and formations are important but it is players and the way they are deployed that win matches.

Since Charlton clinched promotion at Carlisle in April they have kept just one clean sheet so it is unlikely that Blackpool will draw a blank. When you have goal scoring wide players like Tom Ince it is folly to play people out of position. Chris Solly is a right-back, Lawrie Wilson has spent most of the last few seasons operating in midfield. Solly and Evina SHOULD be the full-backs but it is unlikely that they will be the pairing.

The other downside when Charlton play 4-5-1 is that the main attacking ploy seems to be to launch the ball at the lone striker, an easy tactic to defend against, particularly when the striker is not supported quickly from midfield.

With Rob Hulse now at the club, Charlton have the personnel to match up Blackpool’s 4-3-3 shape but Powell, a cautious coach, is unlikely to be that bold. Blackpool are vulnerable at the back and that is where the Addicks should concentrate their efforts to try to get something from the game.

The likelihood is Powell will stick with 4-4-2 and continue with Wilson and Solly as the full-backs, which could lead to an uncomfortable afternoon. Solly on the right and a rampaging Evina on the left would also give the Blackpool wingers more to do defensively, thus reducing their ability to get forward.

Hamer will probably have the same back-four in front of him that he has had for the past few games, though there could be a change in midfield. Johnnie Jackson told me on Tuesday that he hoped to be fit for this game. Hamstrings are difficult injuries to monitor and with heavy rain in Blackpool last night, the pitch is likely to be heavy. With a two week break before the next game, Powell may play safe and give his skipper longer to recover.

Danny Hollands had a poor game on Tuesday which could allow classy Manchester City loanee, Abdul Razak, to start.

Ricardo Fuller and Bradley Wright-Philips are likely to continue at the front with Hulse being introduced from the bench.

Charlton may line-up like this:

Hamer; Wilson, Cort, Morrison, Solly; Green, Stephens, Razak, Kerkar; Fuller, Wright-Phillips.

Subs: Button, Evina, Dervite, Pritchard, Hollands, Wagstaff, Hulse.

Geoff Eltringham from Tyne & Wear will be the referee.

If the Addicks take anything from this game it will be a bonus. Unless the balance of the side is restored, it is difficult to see them coming away with any sort of a result.
