Blackburn Rovers v Charlton Athletic preview
There was a fair bit of activity at The Valley on Thursday but, alas, no new signings. The only player‎ movement saw Taylor Maloney move to League two outfit, Newport County, on a season long loan.

The move will help Maloney’s development, and is just what he needs at this stage of his career.
The squad numbers were released and emphasised the paucity of the squad at present. Only 20 players – including a number of youngsters -‎ have been allocated numbers.

No one has been given the number 11 shirt yet, but it could be earmarked for Callum Harriott if he is offered terms.

With the‎ transfer window closing in less than a week, Charlton still have much to do on the recruitment front.

‎First up for the Addicks will be a tricky trip to Blackburn on Saturday. Midfield is possibly the starkest example of how tough Bowyer’s task is.

He has lost six players in that area – Aribo, Bielik, Cullen, Fosu, Marshall and Reeves – and his one replacement – Chuks Aneke – will miss the game through injury!

It is difficult to see how Bowyer can get any sort of result at Ewood. He is a realist, and this is how he assessed the task:

‎”We played them (Blackburn)a couple of years ago in League One. They’re going to be well-organised, they’re going to be a solid team.

“They have players that can hurt you. They’re going to be the same as any other team – they will have strengths and they’re going to have weaknesses, just the same as us.

“I’d say that this is probably a good time to play us because of the size of our squad at the moment. We’ll go there and compete though. I know that.

“The players that do turn out on Saturday will give 100 per cent. We’re probably starting with one or two more players than what we started with last year.

“Last year we were going to Sunderland and we couldn’t even fill the bench. This year, as it stands today, we can fill the bench. So, we’re a little bit ahead of where we were this time last year.

“Blackburn have an experienced manager; he’s been in the game a long time. We’ll turn up and respect them and I’m sure they’ll respect us as well.”

Unless they make a signing during the course of the day, the Addicks could look like this:

Phillips; Dijksteel, Lockyer, Pearce, Sarr, Purrington; Oshilaja, Forster-Caskey, Pratley, Williams; Taylor.

Subs: Amos, Solly, Lapslie, Morgan,Wiredu, Doughty,Bonne,

‎The referee will be Andy Woolmer from Northamptonshire.
If Bowyer can somehow conjure up a draw, it will be a really good result.
