Charlton are one of only four teams in the Premier and Football League still searching for their first away win of the season.
Karel Fraeye’s team will be in confident mood after their thrilling win against Sheffield Wednesday.
Birmingham are doing well under Gary Rowett, but their form at St Andrews is ordinary, three wins, two draws and three defeats is their record on home soil this season.
Fraeye’s squad picked up more injuries at Milton Keynes and against Wednesday. Physio, Erol Umut will have been working overtime in an effort to get some bodies fit for Saturday.
Ricardo Vaz Te is likely to be involved, probably from the bench. Fraeye is keen to add further to his squad before the loan window closes next Thursday, but it now seems unlikely that there will be an arrival before the Birmingham game.
The Addicks’ international contingent returned unscathed, albeit that Reza Ghoochannejhad had to endure a 25 hour flight back from Guam.
Chris Solly is a doubt but is set to travel to Birmingham, which suggests he is likely to start. Tony Watt is struggling and is unlikely to be involved. Ahmed Kashi is fit again, but this game may come too soon for him.
This is what Fraeye said at his Thursday press conference:
“Tony Watt is still struggling. He hasn’t trained properly for the last two weeks but has been doing a lot of hard work with Erol(Umut). It will be difficult for him to be fit on Saturday.
“Chris Solly received a kick against Sheffield and he has also done quite a lot of work with Erol. We will wait until Saturday before deciding whether he plays or not.
“All of our players that were on international duty returned fit. Johann (Gudmundsson) came back on Wednesday and did a good recovery session today, so there shouldn’t be a problem there.
“Reza (Ghoochannejhad) had a long, 25-hour flight back, so we will have to manage that, but he is fit. Henderson came back very early and we have a very motivated Stephen Henderson back after Ireland’s great result.”
Jordan Cousins should be available and may come in for El-Hadji Ba, and Fraeye may again deploy a diamond midfield. If Solly fails to make it, Cousins will probably slot in at right-back, with Ba retaining his midfield berth.
The head coach has done his homework, and will have devised a game plan, in a bid to gain that elusive first away win.
Charlton may look something like this:
Henderson; Solly, Bauer, Sarr, Fox; Diarra, Cousins, Jackson, Gudmundsson; Makienok, Ghoochannejhad.
Subs: Pope, Holmes-Dennis, Bergdich, Ba, Lookman, Vaz Te, Ahearne-Grant.
Lincolnshire’s Darren Drysdale will be the referee.
It will be a tough game for the Addicks, but they will go into the match in confident mood. Any sort of result is likely to see Fraeye confirmed as permanent head coach.
