Charlton striker Paul Benson could still be on his way out of The Valley despite snubbing moves before the transfer deadline closed.

Benson has slipped out of the first-team picture and boss Chris Powell says a loan move could be an option, although he will not force the 31-year-old through the exit door.

“I’ve been open with Paul that if his chances are limited, then we will look at the possibility of him going out,” said Powell.

“But I don’t want to do that and leave myself short, it has to be right for everyone. Obviously he spoke to clubs and declined moves, which is no problem.

“There is no problem with me trying to usher him out the door, it is more a case of him being happy and me as well.”

Benson has been linked with moves away from The Valley in the past couple of months with both Notts County and Bournemouth having been close to agreeing a deal for his services.

Gillingham have also been linked with the former Dagenham & Redbridge striker who is said to be keen to continue playing football in the south east.
