A mature innings of 92 from Kent batsman Daniel Bell-Drummond proved in vain as England Under-19s slipped lost to Bangladesh in Chittagong.

The defeat sees England go 2-0 down in their seven-match one-day international series against Bangladesh courtesy of the 19-run defeat.

Bell-Drummond, who had spoken of the need for England to make full use of their 50 overs prior to this match, did his best to underpin a successful run chase after Bangladesh had posted 256 for nine, having been invited to bat first.

England’s batsmen were successful in using up their entire allocation, but were unable to keep up with the required run-rate and ultimately fell narrowly short on 237 for seven.

Sam Wood, who had earlier taken three wickets along with Rammy Singh, contributed 30 to an opening stand of 70, while Nottinghamshire team-mate Sam Kelsall chipped in with 43 from number four.

Bangladesh’s total was built on healthy contributions from their top order.

Soumya Sarkar was bowled by Kent bowler Adam Ball for 23, having put on 50 for the first wicket with Liton Das, who duly progressed to 53 before becoming Wood’s first victim.

A partnership of 94 between Salman Hossain and skipper Asif Ahmed, who struck 59 and 45 respectively, strengthened the hosts’ position, and although Wood and Singh did their best to keep things in check, England were left with a stiff target.

Bell-Drummond, his side’s top scorer in the first ODI with 55, responded admirably, striking nine fours in a 124-ball knock that only ended when he fell to Naeem Islam junior at the end of the 40th over.

England required a further 98 at that stage, with seven wickets in hand, and, although Aneesh Kapil, Ball and Kishen Velani each cleared the ropes in the closing overs, they were unable to make up the necessary ground.
