Kent batsman Daniel Bell-Drummond is delighted to be making the most of his good form, after scoring his second consecutive County Championship Century yesterday.
Having scored 103 in Kent’s draw at home to Leicestershire last week, the 21-year-old opener made 123 on day one of his side’s game with Glamorgan yesterday, helping Kent to a score of 330-8 at stumps.
And Bell-Drummond is keen to capitalise on his good start to the season as much as possible, as he told KSN after the first day’s play.
“It’s a great feeling, getting back-to-back hundreds”, he said. “Hopefully I can continue the form.”
“I kept going with Joe [Denly] at the start and Brendan [Nash] – we had a few good partnerships, and they really helped me through. They bowled well in stages, Glamorgan, and the pitch was a pretty good cricket wicket. I think it was key to just play every ball on its merits and try and cash in on the bad balls, but I did feel in really good touch, and hopefully I can keep going with the form I’m in.”
The Lewisham-born batsman was particularly strong through the off-side, regularly cutting through point and other areas to find the boundary.
“It’s worked pretty nicely [his cut shot] in the last two games and it’s one of my good shots”, Bell-Drummond said.
“If bowlers bowl there I’ll try and put it away. I’m feeling pretty good with my game all round. I had two quiet games at Essex and Lancashire, and I worked on a few things with Matt Walker and Jimmy [Adams, Head Coach], and they’ve been helping me with my game, moving forward. I wasn’t far off getting it right, and luckily it’s coming through at the moment.
“Obviously it’s still a long season ahead, and there’s still a lot of challenges ahead, so I’ve got to keep focussed. You know how cricket is, and a few bad scores could be round the corner, so I’m just trying to stay as patient as possible.”
Bell-Drummond’s 249-ball knock helped his side into a strong position on the first day on the game, and was the key reason for it already being Kent’s biggest innings score of the season already, following a disappointing start to the campaign.
“Hopefully we can push on tomorrow and get at least 350”, Bell-Drummond said.
“It’s a good wicket to bat on, but if you bowl in the right areas, it can be tough to score. I think we’re a bit ahead of the game – we got a nice score, but we need to back it up with the ball tomorrow.”
The young Kent batsman’s impressive form has not only caught the eye of his teammates and opposition. Former England batsman and Coach David Lloyd, now a popular commentator on Sky’s cricket coverage, tweeted during Bell-Drummond’s innings:
“Pleased to see D Bell-Drummond starting season so well …really good young player at Kent.”
Though Bell-Drummond was understandably delighted with the praise, he stated his keenness to not let it get to his head.
“It’s always brilliant when guys so high up in the game of cricket are looking out for you and singing your praises. Obviously I’m going to keep my feet on the ground.
“I know how cricket is, and in my very short career, I’ve been through bad and good stages, so I know how it feels, and you just keep trying to cash in on the good form.
“I’m not going to look too far ahead, but just keep trying to play the new ball and keep trying to score runs when I can.”
