Danny Bloor tasted victory as manager of Welling United for the first time in an entertaining pre-season friendly at Beckenham Town.
His team went in at half time two goals to the good but defensive howlers allowed the Becks to draw level before a Welling trialist substitute notched the late decider.
They went ahead in the fourth minute when Antony Papadopoulos took the responsibility from a free kick and he fired it into the top corner.
New signing Alex MacAllister then sent Will Wood away down the wing and he crossed for Papadopoulos who headed just wide. Papadopoulos set up an impressive trialist who fired just over before Beckenham’s Adensite drew a good low save out of Welling’s latest trialist goalkeeper.
Nick Blue beat out a drive from Lewis White before the Welling goalkeeper again thwarted Adensite when his shot was destined for the bottom corner.
Steve Townsend went close with a shot that was deflected on to the bar but it was Welling who went further ahead.
Wood found the outfield trialist with a brilliant cross-field pass. Although his shot was beaten out by Blue, MacAllister was on hand to add his second goal of the pre-season campaign.
Once more the Welling outfield trialist was thwarted by Blue, before the Beckenham goalkeeper made a comfortable save from Papadopoulos.
After the interval the pattern of the first half continued with Blue saving from the trialist after good work by Lewis White before Taylor Curran got on the end of a deep Taofiq Olomowewe cross but headed wide.
Blue made a brilliant reaction save from MacAllister before a Beckenham substitute reduced the arrears. Dieko skipped a challenge allowing him a clear run at goal and he slipped it past the Welling goalkeeper and in off the far post.
Dieko cut in and his shot rebounded back off the bar but it wasn’t long before he levelled. Another defensive error allowed him to break through and he placed it confidently into the bottom corner.
White came close with a shot that rippled the top of the net then Blue made another outstanding save from the Welling trialist.
TJ Bramble sized up a shot but fired over before Olomowewe had a header saved by Beckenham’s substitute goalkeeper.
Five minutes remained when Welling scored the winner. A substitute trialist got on the end of a long clearance and rounded the goalkeeper before sliding it into the empty net.
Bloor has one practice match remaining, on Tuesday evening with a 7pm kick off, against Luton Town under 23s.
