Beckenham Town 2-2 Glebe

In the first league game back at The EPA this season, honours were even as Harvey Brand and Tunde Aderonmu scored for Becks but Glebe equalised twice, first through Jamie Philpot and then Eric Damelo to take a point back home with them.

The game started with the visitors on the front foot with it taking nearly fifteen minutes for Becks to have some meaningful possession inside the attacking third.

The first of a few big calls from the referee came as Bertie Valler’s shot from the outside of the box struck the raised arm of the approaching defender but any appeals were waved away.

A great chance came and went for Becks as everyone watched the ball roll agonisingly across the face of goal from left to right and no one on the pitch could get a touch on it.

Down the other end, Glebe looked dangerous. Their best chance of the half came when they bundled the ball from the left, cut inside and the shot was drilled just past the far post.

A relatively poor half from a Becks perspective looked to be coming to a close with the scores goalless but on the stroke of halftime, a rarity happened. Goalkeeper Michael McEntegart sent his goal kick flying over the Glebe defensive line and Harvey brand managed to chase it down and poked it past the oncoming goalkeeper.

The ball took what felt like an eternity as it crept over the line to give the home fans something to cheer about at the half.

Early in the second half, Glebe equalised through Jamie Philpot. He was released behind the defence and confidently swept the ball past the keeper and into the net. Glebe looked as if they’d taken the lead but the free-kick swung wide at the last second to the relief of the home side.

In what became a half of each side getting a few good chances and then the other did the same, it was Becks’ turn. A ball delivered early from the right was inventively controlled by Ryan Hall on the six-yard box but he couldn’t get a good enough shot off in time.

The introduction of Tunde Aderonmu for the home side tipped the balance in his side’s favour for the mid part of the half. He made an instant impact as he was sent running down the left side of the box, bearing down on goal he was taken out by the last man for a stonewall penalty and what should’ve been a red card.

However, to the dismay of everyone in the ground, the referee bottled the decision and only gave a yellow.

Ryan Hall stepped up to take the penalty on the back of scoring one in the FA Cup win against Mile Oak last week. The keeper dived to his left which was exactly where Hall put it and despite having a lot of power on it the placement wasn’t good enough to beat the goalkeeper.

Tunde Aderonmu made his mark on the scoresheet after being played in by a chipped ball down the left-wing, he cut inside and the shot deflected off of a Glebe defender and skewed away from the keeper into the bottom corner.

Just as Becks looked like they had a grasp of this game, the visitors hit back again. A sumptuous left-footed curler into the top left corner from Eric Damelo bent around the goalkeeper to put his side back on level terms again.

Both sides searched for a winner as the final whistle drew near, Tunde Aderonmu found Ryan Hall on the edge of the box but his shot was blazed over the bar. Glebe went down the other end and appealed for a penalty of their own but the referee waved it away.

Deep into stoppage time, Becks had a corner which very nearly found its way into the far corner without anyone touching it. The keeper did very well to get a strong punch to it to clear the danger.

The game ended 2-2 with the visitors picking up their first point of the campaign and Becks continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Becks next game is away to bitter rivals Tunbridge Wells in the FA Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday. It is an all ticketed event so if you want to attend you must email: [email protected].
