Peter Taylor’s first month in charge of Welling United ended with victory against Billericay Town.
Three wins, one draw and two defeats was a reasonable return after taking over following a six-nil trouncing, and pushed them up from twentieth to thirteenth ahead of their visit to Bath City.
It hasn’t been all plain sailing for the Romans this season, either. They have won three and lost seven in their ten games, so far, and were unable to visit Ebbsfleet United last week due to a Covid case in their ranks. They started with two victories in their first two games and have only won one league game since then, away to Braintree Town.
They have signed two players on loan, Tom Mehew from Bristol Rovers and Zak Delaney from West Bromwich Albion, to bolster their ranks. However, their manager Jerry Gill is without an assistant as Jim Rollo has left the club after twenty-two years as player, captain, caretaker manager and assistant. His resignation was reported to have been for non-football related reasons.
Aaron Barnes scored the only goal when Welling beat Billericay on Saturday as they bounced back from their previous defeat and Taylor’s side will be keen to build on that. The signing of Arthur Penney, on loan from Millwall, appeared to have had a positive effect as cover for James Matthews and Teddy Perkins, both out injured.
Due to Covid-19 causing two seasons to be curtailed or declared null and void, Welling haven’t visited Twerton Park since September 2018 when goals by Gavin McCallum and Danny Mills secured the points.
That will count for little on Saturday as there are no Welling players from that day remaining in their squad, and just three of the Bath team are still at Twerton Park.
