After their F.A. Cup exploits Welling United are back in league action with a challenging trip to Bath City.
Welling manager Steve King knows that it will be a hard match. “Very very tough.” is how he described the task ahead. He continued “Their home form is the best in the league, I don’t think they’ve lost at home in the league.
“They’re on the same points as us. There’s just goal difference in it. We’re under no illusions going there. It’s going to be a tough tough afternoon.”
As suggested, the Romans have the joint best home record in the league having won their last four games at Twerton Park following their opening day defeat against Dartford. Since then, they have seen of Gloucester City (3-0), Dulwich Hamlet (2-1), Weston-super-Mare (2-0) and Hungerford Town (4-0).
However, Welling are unbeaten in six league games, and along with their F.A. Cup success, are also in excellent form and will visit full of confidence.
Away from home, the Wings have won two, drawn two and lost one but with a little luck it would have had an even better record. They conceded a 97th minute equaliser away to Truro and how they came away from Eastbourne empty handed is still a mystery.
When the two teams met at Twerton Park last season, they appeared to be cruising to victory. Harry Phipps put them ahead and it appeared to be just a matter of when they would score again before disaster struck and Tom Bradbrook and Bradley Goldberg both went off injured in a ten minute spell in the first half.
They continued to create and miss chances before the Romans made them pay with a 67th minute equaliser scored by Jamie Lucas. After that, the game petered out and there were no further clear cut chances so the spoils were shared.
