Bath City v Welling United preview

When Bath City visited Welling United in December, the Wings won to end their very long run without a home Saturday league win.

On Saturday, Welling will play the return match hoping to end their winless away record stretching back to Boxing Day.

Should they be successful, they will complete just their third double of the season with only Concord Rangers and Margate having been defeated by Welling home and away.

Adam Coombes gave Welling an early lead when the two teams met at Park View Road however Andy Watkins came close to equalising when his header came back off the post.

Shortly after the half time interval, the Romans did equalise when Frankie Artus headed home from a corner. However, his joy turned to despair when he brought down Christian Nanetti in the penalty area and Coombes converted from the spot.

Coombes then turned provider when laying back to Harry Crawford and he slotted home. Welling saw out the last fifteen minutes with no further alarm.

Shawn McCoulsky has been recalled by Bristol City from his loan spell at Bath so will miss the game. Welling supporters may recall him from earlier in the season when he gave the Wings defence a tough time whilst enjoying a spell with Weston-super-Mare.

Currently in sixteenth place, Welling could finish one place above or below, depending on their result and those of others. Meanwhile ninth placed Bath cannot finish higher, but failure to win could see them drop to eleventh.

Alex Dyer, Welling’s manager, stated that he will play his strongest team possible despite their Kent Senior Cup Final game with Dover Athletic two days later. “Whatever side we put out, we’ve got to make sure we go and win the game.”he said, adding “We’ve got to make sure we give a good account of ourselves. Let’s give them (the travelling supporters) something to cheer about.”

He hopes to have injured players back in contention, but won’t rush them back if not fully fit. “Jordan Brown had a hamstring and they can take two or three weeks. I don’t think it’s a serious one but he needs to monitor that.

“Phil Walsh has got an ingrowing toenail which he’s had for a long while and he needs to look after it. That needs to settle down. I hope that we have a full squad. I know all of them want to play.”
