Once again, Welling United disappointed their travelling fans with a lacklustre away day performance.
Although the Welling team coach did not arrive at Twerton Park until 14:15, that was no excuse for the team’s failure to put in any sort of performance.
Nick McCootie shot wide from 25 yards then Marvin Morgan fired over after Welling sloppiness gave him the opportunity.
Rhys Murrell-Williamson was just wide with a free kick curled in towards the far post before he fired a shot from outside the area that was claimed easily by Max O’Leary.
When play was stooped for an injury, Welling were disappointed that a Bath player hoofed the uncontested drop ball out for a goal kick rather than back to Wings’ goalkeeper Chris Lewington.
They cared little, however, and went ahead after eighteen minutes. Andy Watkins sent McCootie away and he finished with ease.
It soon became two when Frankie Artus sent Miles Welch-Hayes clear and his cross was finished by Watkins. Welling questioned the fact that there was a possible offside in both stages of the attack but the officials were not interested.
Chris Lewington then made a good save from an Axel Andresson free kick before Tyrone Marsh fired high and wide for Welling. That turned out to be the end of the game for him as both he and the ineffectual Pierre Joseph-Dubois were substituted just after the half hour mark.
Alex Cathline got on the end of a decent Welling movement but he was unable to find sufficient power to bother O’Leary.
Matt Fish was off target with a first time effort after Sam Hatton’s shot was blocked out.
Billy Murphy curled an effort wide before the game transcended into poor play and awful football.
Out of the blue, Welling pulled one back with twelve minutes to go when Hatton rifled a 35 yarder into the top corner.
Sadly, Welling were unable to create another clear cut chance and they had Lewington to thank for keeping them in the game with an excellent save from Watkins.
As a hugely disappointing league campaign ended, the travelling Welling supporters who have travelled home and away all season were disappointed that only four players acknowledged them at the end of the game.
