Welling United missed out on the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table when defeated 1-0 at Bath City.Welling United

Unusually for them, the Wings failed to register a single shot on target while Jamie Turner, replacing the injured Sam Mott, made a number of fine saves.

Elliott Chamberlain gave notice of the problems he was going to cause in the early minutes but shot narrowly wide having made the opportunity for himself.

Turner’s first good save came from an Aaron Brown free kick after Anthony Acheampong had been cautioned.

A flowing move involving Jake Reid and Kiernan Hughes-Mason gave Ross Lafayette a great chance but he was unable to get his shot away first time and the danger was cleared.

Off target efforts from Jake Gallagher and Lafayette followed as the visitors enjoyed a spell on top  however Turner was called into action again when charging down a shot from Chamberlain on the break.

Chamberlain’s work rate brought about the only goal. Chasing down a back pass he hassled Welling into a hurried clearance and when the ball found its way to Sekani Simpson, the Bath defender finished with aplomb.

Ryan Charles could have doubled the lead before Jamie Day’s free kick just before the break flew over the bar.

Lafayette netted early in the second period but the referee had already blown his whistle for a perceived foul on Jason Meller from Lee Clarke’s’ excellent cross.

After that Welling played some good passing football in midfield but failed to find the all important final ball and Turner was twice called into action saving from Chamberlain and Adam Connolly.

Former Roman Kurtis Guthrie replaced Hughes-Mason as Welling tried a three striker approach but Welling still struggled to create an opening.

Giannoulis Fakinos was introduced in place of Clarke but his involvement lasted barely ten minutes when he was sent off for a wild challenge.

Bath replaced Chamberlain in the 88th minute with Kerry Morgan, and the substitute had a chance to score in injury time but his shot lacked the power to trouble Turner.
