Gillingham captain Adam Barrett is backing Peter Taylor to take over as manager at the club in the long term.
Taylor has been in the role of interim manager at Priestfield for the past three games, recording one win, but suffering two defeats.
However, Barrett believes Taylor is the right man for the job in the long term and would be delighted if Chairman Paul Scally offered the former England Under manager the job on a permanent basis:
“It’s important that we have stability there as we don’t want managers changing left, right and centre. I don’t think the Chairman is like that, but it’s up to the Chairman to make that decision.”
“Peter has come in now and we want to do well for him. As players, this is our careers and our livelihood and we want to win games.”
“Obviously Peter wants us to win games and that will give him a better chance of getting the job. There have been some good improvements on the pitch, we are starting to keep the ball better, it’s going to take a little bit of time because the whole structure is different now to as it was under Martin.”
“The other day at Port Vale, the performance in the first half I thought was first class and it was the goal just after half time that changed that, but you can see the difference in the way we controlled the game.”
“Hopefully we can improve and nothing would please anyone more if Peter gets the job as that means we are getting results.”
“That’s what we all want and we all want what’s best for the Football Club.”
Speaking exclusively to Kent Sports News, Barrett believes the side are more than capable of climbing the League One table and pulling clear of the relegation zone:
“We’ll be alright, we’ve got a good bunch of players there, good characters. It’s a tough league now and there’s a lot of clubs probably from mid table down.”
“There’s not a lot in it and one or two good results and you’re right out of it.”
“Hopefully, we can start picking up one or two more three points and drag ourselves up the table.”
Under Taylor, Gillingham have been playing a different brand of football than seen under the Martin Allen era and Barrett is a big fan of trying to keep the ball on the deck more:
“I’ve played with various different managers now and they’ve all got their own style. Martin had his own style and it was very successful.”
“We won the Championship last year and it’s only the second time in the club’s history, so I have the utmost respect for Martin and what he has done and I think a lot of the players have as well.”
“Peter’s here now with a different style put in place and we’ve got to adapt to playing that. We’re enjoying playing it, the longer we play like it, the better we’re going to get at it, so that’s what we are going to look to do and if Peter gets the job it means we’ve got the results and at the end of the day we all just want Gillingham to do well.”
