Tom Barley had one of the best years of his life this season starting with the VW Cup and culminating in his British Touring Car debut.
Tom has done it all with the help of Gravesend’s Team Hard and the guidance of their team boss Tony Gilham.
Speaking exclusively to Kent Sports News who have backed Tom this season, he said: “2013 was a big success for me. Numerous top ten VW Cup finishes, qualifying on the front row, and making my BTCC debut were particularly good moments. I developed a lot this season.
“The VW Cup is a fantastic championship for evolving as a racing driver. You can be 0.5 seconds off pole and start mid pack. You have to be 100% committed to finish in the top 10, and on you’re A game to finish the races. It’s been a great year for me in the VW Cup.”
Tom finished in a very creditable eleventh place in the Championship although he was hoping for a little bit more.
He added: “It wasn’t the top 10 if hoped for, and I could go through the ‘ifs and buts’ but there’s little point. I’m satisfied with the result, but look forward to an even stronger 2014.
“Absolutely. That really made a difference. I was on for a third at Spa before I went off, but that’s racing. Everyone gets their bad luck through the year.”
Tony saw the potential in Tom and he was rewarded with his opportunity in the BTCC in the season finale at Brands Hatch.
“I definitely didn’t think I’d finish the year off on the BTCC grid. What a beautiful situation that was. I revelled in the opportunity and soaked it up. The BTCC is the absolute pinnacle for me.
“Whenever I reflect on the brands hatch BTCC weekend I smile. I didn’t quite make my top 15 aim, 16th being my best finish but that’s pretty close! We all left Brands very happy.”
The season has now ended but there is no resting for Tom as he looks ahead to 2014 and getting back on track.
He said: “The off season will give me chance to sort my 2014 racing plans. I’ll be in the VW Cup in a rejuvenated Golf, set to compete with the Siroccos, racing in the Masters historic championship in two American V8s and Group 2 BMW CSL. Another BTCC appearance is certainly on the cards too.
“If mine and Tony’s plans come to fruition, yes, I will be fighting for the championship in 2014. The golfs should be quicker next season, as will I. Watch this space, there’s a Golf coming for it!
“I am looking for additional people to partner with for 2014. My range of racing activities and exciting ideas give me the perfect platform to create relationships that benefit all involved. Please do get in touch to find out more.”
