Kent’s Benn Barham and partner Dan Greenwood halved both their foursomes and fourballs against the US in the PGA Cup on Saturday.Benn Barham11

The 37 year old from Tenterden helped GB & Ireland to earn a point as they go into the final day on Sunday trailing 10.5 / 5.5 at Slaley Hall.

Barham was in inspirational form as he and Greenwood were three up after the 11th against Rod Perry and Jeff Sorensen in the foursomes in the morning.

But successive birdies for the Americans reduced the lead. The Brits increased their lead back to two for one hole only leaving them in the box seat going down the last.

Both teams missed the green but Perry increased the pressure on Greenwood with a perfectly executed chip to within four foot of the pin.

Greenwood attempted to follow suit but his effort was short and rolled back to leave Barham a testing putt, which he rolled past the hole. Sorensen made no mistake from close range to square the match.

Barham said after the foursomes: “It was a fantastic and we played well. That’s probably the best foursomes I’ve ever played. We both played nicely, kept the ball in play and didn’t make many mistakes.”

“They didn’t play their best on the front nine they were three or four under on the back nine and matching them to a certain extent. It was just a shame on that last hole.”

“We were licking our wounds after yesterday and you have to be very aware on an injured animal. We were a little hurt after the whitewash as we didn’t expect that as we’ve got a good team.”

Barham will be the first of the singles to go out on Sunday as he takes on American Mike Small with his tee off set for 9:30am.
