Lee Bowyer adopted a more traditional shape on Saturday – with two strikers up front – and played the game at a much higher tempo than Karl Robinson favoured.
Interestingly, Robinson also adopted a 4-4-2 formation with a diamond midfield on Sunday.
Nicky Ajose is a poacher who scored bucket loads of goals for Swindon before his switch to The Valley.
Ajose needs a partner to be seen at his best, something he has rarely had during his time at Charlton.
In tandem with Michal Zyro, he looked a different player. Lively, enthusiastic and desperately unlucky not to score.
And a few days earlier Karl Robinson said he had not done enough to ‘deserve’ a start.
Zyro is another with a point to prove. He needs minutes under his belt to get back to his best after a long spell on the sidelines. But surprisingly, Robinson never gave him a run out with the Under-23s. Unless there is something in the terms of his loan, it is difficult to know why.
Here is what the Wolves loanee had to say after Saturday’s win over Plymouth:
”Nicky and I started together for the first time. Mentally, we are hungry about playing and enjoying football.
“Every player wants to play – I signed on loan to play games. I didn’t expect to play for 90 minutes from the first game because I didn’t play for a long time before (due to a serious knee injury).
“I just expected a chance for 20 or 30 minutes. Now it’s good. Saturday was my second Charlton goal and I need to keep going and keep my health and be ready for Northampton on Friday.
“We changed our mentality a little bit and I felt we were fighting all the time against Plymouth.
“Every player gave 100 per cent and we scored two goals. We need to keep (more) clean sheets and we’ll be all good,” said Zyro, who went on to explain his ball-under-the-shirt goal celebration:
“Our baby is due in the middle of June.
“It’s the first time I’ve done that celebration. I wanted to do it in a home game because my wife is always in the stands watching. It was really nice to have the chance to do it.”
There will be added pressure at Northampton on Friday for Lee Bowyer and his team on Friday.
So impressive was the display against Plymouth, that expectation levels have gone through the roof.
Bowyer has already made problems for himself, albeit the ones all managers like to have.
The whole team played well on Saturday, and it was almost impossible to pick out a star man, they all had good games.
Bowyer was without Ezri Konsa and Josh Magennis, who were away on international duty.
But will they be able to reclaim their places at Sixfields?
