The Assassins Peewees had a tough start to their league campaign with 2 games against league leaders Eastbourne Edge after a late fixture change.
With a very short bench consisting of just 6 skaters plus netminder, the Assassins faced an uphill struggle against a very powerful team.
Game 1 – The first period started very quickly and the Assassins were under immediate pressure from an experienced Eastbourne team and it wasn’t long before they found the back of the net. The first period finally came to an end with the Assassins losing 6-1, but there were positives to take away, which included a fine goal from Ryan.
The second period got underway with the Assassins playing better and clearly learning as they gained experience. A great goal from Rob saw us draw the 2nd period 1-1 which meant the score was now 7-2 to the Edge.
After having played 2 periods with less than 2 lines, the Assassins were now beginning to tire, and although there were periods of good play, Eastbourne scored 3 unanswered goals.
Although the final score was 10-2, there were plenty of positives to be taken from the game and the steady improvement was encouraging.
Game 2 – After learning from Game 1 and receiving encouraging words from the coaches, the Assassins faced Eastbourne for the second time in one day.
The first period started and the Assassins were playing a much better game. Tiredness was again a factor as long shifts were required due to lack of numbers, but the first period ended 3-0 to the Edge.
Still improving our game in the second, Luke scored a great long range effort to lift the team once again and the second finished with the score 5-1.
A now exhausted Assassins team rallied for the final period of the day and with Luke scoring once again the team drew the third period 1-1, so with a final score of 6-2, the team had gained valuable experience which will be taken into the next games, and hopefully with a larger bench can give Eastbourne a closer game.
A tough but very enjoyable day for the Peewee’s, who will now continue to train hard ahead of their next league games.
