The Medway Assassins Peewee (under 12’s) team travelled to Rotherham at the weekend having earned their place in the BISHA 2013 National Competition as newly crowned champions of the South East/London East league.
After winning the first two matches on day one of their campaign against Oxford and Boreham hopes were high but defeats against Chippy Trixters and Ash Vipersmeant that after day 1 the Assassins, who were the youngest team in the Tournament, had 2 wins and 2 defeats.
Sunday morning saw the first of two battles against previous Nationals winners Eastbourne Edge, the result was a 4-2 loss for the Assassins. The match wasn’t without its highs as the tournament’s youngest player and rising Medway star Hayden Mills aged just 5 squeezed one passed Eastbourne’s Goalie and so added his name to the score sheet much to the approval of supporters and officials alike.
The end of the league stage saw the Assassins placed 4th and so faced Eastbourne in the first semi-final. Again with the age and experience of the Edge side unmatched the final score was 4-0 to Eastbourne.
The Assassins last match of the competition saw them pitched against Trixters to decide 3rd and 4th place but it was not to be Medway’s day and they went down 8-3 to a much bigger team but not before Hayden Mills stamped his mark on the game by scoring his second goal of the tournament which again was met with much applause.
The weekend ended on a high at the presentation ceremony as Medway were confirmed as 4th place finishers and also picked up the competition’s Fair Play Award for the second year in a row, having racked up a total of just 2 minutes penalty time.
Then, to top off a great weekend, Hayden Mills, who was awarded a place in the BISHA Dream Team as voted by the club managers and competition officials. A fitting end to a tough couple of days, the experience of which will be taken back to training over the coming winter months.
