Asher-Smith claims World silver

Kent’s Dina Asher-Smith has claimed a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday night.

Having recorded an incredible fourth place in the Women’s 200m final just months after breaking her foot, Asher-Smith from Orpington, helped guide her quartet to second place as Daryll Neita led her team to silver ahead of 2015 champions Jamaica.

The American team, anchored by individual champion Tori Bowie, won the race in a time of 41.82 seconds.

The GB quartet of Asha Philip, Desiree Henry, Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita came home in 42.12 seconds.

Britain were roared home by a packed London Stadium crowd and Neita, on the anchor leg, held off Jamaica by 0.07s to secure second place.

Bronze at the Olympics in Rio was a major success. This was a step up again from a team with an average age of 22.

“We have worked so hard for us,” Neita said. “I tried my best down that last stretch and I’m ecstatic to bring the team a silver.”

Asher-Smith, who has recovered from a fracture to her right foot, said: “To upgrade from Olympic bronze to world silver with these girls has been absolutely incredible, and to do it at home means so much. We are so proud to win the medal in London.”

They left the last word, though, to Henry. “The relay is so, so important,” she said. “Ultimately, none of us could do it alone, so this is just a monumental team effort.”
