Sevenoaks racing driver Mike Conway was back on track this weekend and it was another solid one for the race ace.
He finished 12th overall and fifth in class to ensure that they had a good performance in the warm and sunny surroundings of Spa-Francorchamps.
There was a 34 strong grid for the six hour race in Belgium and Conway put his car on the grid sixth in class for the race.
The race got off to a great start for the G-Drive Racing team and they were soon up to fourth in the race, before a safety car after an accident at Eau Rouge, after Antonio Pizzonia hit the tyre wall.
They continued to push in hour three and were running in second place in the LMP2 class before a freak accident saw Conway’s teammate Roman Rusinov’s drinks tube got tangled with his steeting wheel forcing him to pit.
They lost places due to this but a combination of Conway, Martin and Rusinov managed to bring their car home in 5th place in class.
Speaking after the race Conway said: “It’s a shame we didn’t get the result we could have as we would have been fighting for the win. We learnt a lot as a team and we will be working hard to get things right for Le Mans in over a months’ time – I can’t wait!”
The World Endurance Championships now heads to the iconic Le Mans circuit for round three of the 2013 season on the 22nd June. Le Mans 24 hour race will be celebrating its 90th birthday this year, so it is sure to be an extra special weekend.
