The start of Josh Andrews’ Gillingham career has been frustrating, to put it bluntly. However, with a goal on his first start have meant things are starting to look-up for the Gills number nine.
The January signing only made his full debut for the Club two weeks ago after battling his way back from injury and with the last game of the season coming this weekend as Doncaster Rovers visit Priestfield, Andrews can be forgiven for not wanting the season to end at 5.00pm on Saturday evening.
“I’ve only recently come back into starting games,” Andrews admitted. “I scored against Barrow and feel like I’m in a good run of form, but the season’s coming to an end, and I will need to work on myself in the summer, work hard pre-season and hit the ground running next season!”
“A first goal in my first start and it was at home too in front of all the Gills fans, it was really good to get the first goal for the club! I feel good right now and given the off-season and then the pre-season work, I will be raring to go in August!”
Talking about his move South, Andrews said, “It was quite late in the window that I knew about the interest. Having previously worked with Robbie (Stockdale) there was a close link there and then once I had heard about the ambitions of the Club from Brad (Galinson) and the Gaffer, I was on my way almost instantly.”
“It got over the line and I am very happy to be here! It’s a Club that has ambition and definitely does not want to be sitting around in League Two – I think this season, although we have not achieved what we should have, I can see the strength in the squad; I can see the Gaffer’s ambition and how he wants to play and I know that next season we should have something really good coming up here.”
“The main thing for me is scoring goals. I know that is something that the Club has struggled with and hopefully that is something that I can come in and help with by getting my share.”
“It is not just that, but getting players into the game and getting players involved, holding the ball up and doing the ugly stuff that you have to do sometimes.”
“I’d love to carry on as I haven’t had a full season, but I can’t control that, so I have to go into the off-season now trying to stay sharp and come back as fit as possible.”
“The supporters have been amazing with me, and I know that some of them have been frustrated by the way that the season has gone, but you can really tell that they are backing the Club.”
“All the players in the squad want to win every game that they can which is nearly impossible, but you try your hardest and I hope the fans realise that we all work as hard as we can.”
“Sitting in the crowd you are close to the fans, and you can talk to them when you are taking your seat, a lot of them have asked when I would be back!”
“It was two weeks and then I got another injury, and it was two more weeks, but they have been great! Fans will always back a new signing, but I would like to be able to have performed even more on the pitch with more goals and more celebrations with them!”
“As a striker you go to a Club to score goals and I back myself to do that.”
“It has been frustrating and certainly takes a toll mentally having to watch everyone training and then battling on the pitch on a Saturday, with me watching from the stands just wishing that I could play.”
“It has been tough, I have had the staff around me and they have all helped me fit in and be comfortable which has taken some of the pressure off as coming into a new Club injured is never an ideal start!”
