There was some scepticism when the news broke in December that Tony Watt was training at Sparrows Lane and would sign a permanent deal at The Valley come January.

No one doubted Watt’s ability, but questions had been previously raised about the player’s attitude and fitness.

The Coatbridge born striker only turned 21 at the end of December and has possibly struggled to handle the limelight and expectation levels.

He will forever be remembered for a goal he scored in 2012. On a cold, early November night, Watt came off the bench to net an 83rd minute goal as Celtic beat Barcelona 2-1 in the Champion’s League. That goal may have become a millstone round his young neck.

Watt started his career at Aidrie, where his prowess alerted both Old Firm clubs, as well as Liverpool and Fulham, to his burgeoning talent.

He scored eight goals in seventeen league games, whilst on loan at Belgian club Lierse during the 2013/14 season.

Standard Liege saw enough to pay Celtic £1,300,000 for his services in the summer of 2014.

Watt has also played for Scotland at Under-19 and Under-20 level, as well as scoring five goals in nine appearances for the national Under-21 team.

In June of 2013, Watt was called up to Gordon Strachan’s senior Scotland side, for the World Cup qualifier against Croatia in Zagreb.

Watt scored just twice in thirteen league games for Standard this season and was made available for transfer. The move abroad may have come to soon for him and he is more than pleased to be back in Britain.

Watt is a feisty character, when he came on as a second half substitute for his Valley debut against Brighton, he had no hesitation in berating Rhoys Wiggins when the full-back failed to make the overlapping run he wanted.

After the game, the young Scot was complimented on his performance by a fan and told him, “I just want to win.”

Before the influx of foreign players to the English game, every side wanted the passion of a Scot in their team.

Watt again showed his pace, movement and desire when he was introduced in the second half at Vicarage Road on Saturday, and clearly offers Charlton something a little different.

At the final whistle, Watt went to the fans and gave a youngster his shirt.

He will ultimately be judged on the goals he scores, but the early signs are good. A character for sure, and if he has found a club where he feels comfortable and allows his natural talent to flourish, he will quicky become an Addicks icon.
