Altrincham v Welling United preview

Two consecutive poor performances have left Welling United rock bottom of the Vanarama National and confirmed their relegation.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Although they went ahead at home to Kidderminster, they were hanging on before the visitors claimed two late goals. If that performance was disappointing, their showing at Chester last week was woeful.

After that game, then Welling manager Frost said that he had expected the team to give a good account of themselves but the players put in a display that he could only describe as ‘gutless’.

Now news has been released stating that Mark Goldberg has taken over team management duties for the rest of the season and that Frost, plus assistant manager Barry Ashby and goalkeeper coach Jamie Turner have left the club.

Also in the announcement was the expectation that Goldberg could potentially take over as major shareholder of the club in the near future.

When Welling visit Altrincham on Saturday, it will be the second time in two years that they will be up against a Wings’ caretaker manager in his first week in charge. Loui Fazakerley started his reign at home to the Robins last season, now they host Goldberg’s first game on Saturday.

Altrincham have their own worries. Should they fail to beat Welling they could join the Wings and Kidderminster Harriers in being already relegated from the Vanarama National League prior to the final week of the season.

The first meeting between the two clubs this season ended in a one all draw at Park View Road. Michael Rankine put the visitors ahead just shy of the hour mark but Sahr Kabba grabbed a last minute equaliser to claim a share of the points.

Last season’s game at Moss Lane ended with Welling celebrating an excellent four-nil win. Harry Beautyman put the visitors ahead. Tyrone Marsh added a second on the half hour mark, and Jake Gallagher made it three in first half injury time.

Chris Bush put the icing on the cake with a late strike to send the Welling supporters home happy.

It remains to be seen who will take to the field on Saturday. Goldberg must decide on his starting line up based on one training session, fitness and recent match videos.
