Martin Allen has drawn up a list of potential signings as he looks to bolster his Gillingham squad ahead of the new season.
The new Gillingham manager is working closely with Director of Football Andy Hessenthaler as they look to bring in the targets they’ve identified between them with Chairman Paul Scally now on holiday for the next couple of weeks.
The Gillingham squad will head off to Le Touquet on Thursday for a four day training camp with Hessenthaler left back at Priestfield to work on the potential targets whilst Allen runs the rule over his squad.
Having been in the job almost a week, Allen is looking at bringing in some new players into the club with quality the key to any new faces coming in:
“If we can bring some new faces in, some good players that will improve our starting eleven then it will be exciting,” he told BBC Radio Kent.
“You’ve got to aim for promotion and I think we do need to improve the team. I’ve discussed this with Andy (Hessenthaler) and the chairman at length and all three of us are in full agreement that we need to improve the starting eleven.
“We don’t need much work done on the extra squad, maybe one or two as there are now seven subs nowadays, but to improve the starting eleven is the key.”
One player that won’t be coming to Priestfield is former Barnet striker Izale Mcleod with Allen ruling out a move for him as he would be too expensive for the club.
An area that Allen is considering strengthening is the goalkeeping department with Ross Flitney unlikely to be fit for the new season, Daren Hawkes likely to be loaned out to gain more experience and the chance of Paulo Gazzaniga being sold in the transfer window.
One name Allen has been linked with is former Notts County keeper Stuart Nelson who is out of contract and in search of a new club.
