Alfreton Town v Welling United preview

Two wins in four days have taken Welling out of the relegation zone at the expense of Alfreton Town who they visit on Saturday.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Both teams are on equal points from the same number of games but the Wings’ superior goal difference gives them the advantage going into their final two games.

However, the Impact Arena is not an easy place to visit and Alfreton have declared the game a ‘pay what you want game’ in an effort to bring in local support and make the atmosphere electric.

Loui Fazakerley, Welling’s manager accepts that it is not always possible to play passing football and was pleased with the way his team battled to hold onto their win on Tuesday night. “ It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to think that it’s going to be a bit of a scrap. They’re obviously going to be very up for it but we’re going to go into the game with full confidence.”

After the difficulties on Tuesday night, caused by the late arrival of Jake Gallagher, Jonathan Henly and Ben Jefford, they will be fresh and available for selection along with the returning Tashan Adeyinka, Joe Healy and Ben Jefford. However, the players who came in all put in compelling performances.

Who will start remains open to debate. Fazakerley admitted “I’ve always said it’s a squad game. It’s going to be a tough decision in who to pick but it’s a good problem.”

When the two teams met at Park View Road, Alfreton were beneficiaries of two first half penalties, both converted by Bradley Wood. Karl Hawley made the game safe with fifteen minutes to go.

Rowan Vine pulled one back from the penalty spot with three minutes remaining and Chris Bush gave the Wings’ fans a few minutes of hope but they were unable to complete an incredible come back.

That was at the time when Welling were at a low point, however. Having played few games with a number of new players, they were going through a difficult transitional spell.

There is a different spirit now and buoyed by the backing of over 100 Welling supporters, the Wings will go into the game full of positivity knowing that a victory would almost guarantee them safety.
