Defender Cheye Alexander is relishing life at the moment as Gillingham head to Crawley Town this weekend looking to defend their one hundred percent start.
The full-back, who won last season’s “goal of the season” award for his pile driver against AFC Wimbledon, spoke to KSN this week and started by reflecting on the midweek win at Sutton United – he told us, “We always knew it would be tough on Tuesday night as Sutton is always a very tough place to go on a Saturday, let alone on a Tuesday night!”
“But we went there, did our job, and came away with the win and the three points. As a group we know that we can compete with everyone and anyone, but going to Sutton and getting the win will give the group and the squad even more confidence.”
“We’ve got a great squad at the minute, and you’ve seen in the last few games the impact and the difference that the subs have made when they’ve come on.”
“That’s gone now, and we move on to Saturday!”
“You go into every season wanting or hoping to win every game to start with, but to win three on the bounce with three clean sheets as well is perfect.”
“It’s great and pleasing that we’ve got both after three games – we go into every game wanting to get a clean sheet as you know that if we do, you’ve got a great chance of winning, but to have nine points as well as the three clean sheets, you couldn’t ask for anything better!”
“The momentum from last season has carried on – we all said at the end of last year we had to take what we had into this year, and I think that we have as it showed in performances.”
“But it’s only a start – we’re only three games in and got many more games to come. We’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing and hopefully it will continue!”
“At this time of the year, you really can’t look at the League table and it’s literally that we’re coming in every day, working hard and winning the next game – that’s the main goal for us and I think that will always be the goal throughout the season; don’t look at the table until right at the end…”
Alexander added, “… and hopefully when we do we’ll be sitting where we are right now!”
