After a difficult last week, Welling United are back on the road looking to start turning good performances into wins.
Coming away empty handed from Forest Green Rovers, Wrexham and Woking were all hard to take but failing to score in any of the games, despite having large parts of all three on top, proved costly ultimately.
An evening visit to mid-table Aldershot Town won’t be an easy fixture but the Welling management team and players still believe they are more for a match for anyone in the league if they can put in a full 90 plus minute performance.
Manager Loui Fazakerley said “It’s a game we’re going into to win. If we begin that game and play as we have been and can, I expect us to go on and win.”
Against Torquay United on Saturday, Welling played for an hour against ten men with the score at 1-1. Although they created chances, they did not push on as hoped and that frustrated goalscorer Xavier Vidal. Talking about the Aldershot game he said “We need to go away and win. The boys are disappointed. We should use that aggression and anger and take it there on Tuesday.”
Long term injuries will preclude Fazakerley and Kieron St. Aimie from playing whilst Sahr Kabba serves the second game of his controversial three game suspension. Harry Osborne, who pulled up with a hamstring strain on Saturday, will be checked out to see if he is able to play. Better news for the Wings is that Barney Williams and Joey Taylor have recovered from their injuries so Nortei Nortey (Leatherhead) and Kojo Awotwi (VCD Athletic) have been sent out to get some playing time.
So far this season, Aldershot have won one, drawn one and lost two at home. They started with a 1-2 defeat to Gateshead before drawing 1-1 with Dover Athletic. Another 1-2 defeat, this time versus Eastleigh followed before they broke their duck with a 3-2 victory over FC Halifax Town.
On Saturday, Aldershot were beaten by a second half onslaught at Grimsby Town. Although the Shots were one-nil up at the break, four second half goals from the Mariners gave the promotion challengers an emphatic victory.
There will be a familiar face for the travelling fans as former Wings’ captain Jake Gallagher is now an Aldershot player.
In the corresponding fixture in February, Welling were left crestfallen when Ryan Jarvis smashed a penalty down the middle in second half stoppage time to give the hosts the points. Jim Stevenson had given the Shots the lead on 41 minutes but Dominic Vose equalised with a rocket that went in off the underside of the bar four minutes later.
Welling will be keen to reverse that result, and to kick-start the current campaign.
