Any hopes of an extended F.A. Trophy run for Welling United were ended at Aldershot Town.
It was never going to be easy for the Wings when visiting a team from a higher league however, for the first sixty minutes they matched them.
Ultimately, the hosts substitutes made a difference, and it is they who will host Leiston in the next round.
Justin Amaluzor had the first goal effort when Ody Alfa’s low cross fell for him on the edge of the penalty area. He struck it cleanly, but Kai McKenzie-Lyle was equal to it with a regulation low save.
After that Welling had a good fifteen minutes but struggled to make chances, the nearest they came was when Amadou Kassarate headed just over from a Taylor Maloney free kick.
Ryan Glover shot harmlessly wide from over twenty-five yards out then a good Welling move involving Chi Ezzenolim and Stefan Payne ended when Shots’ goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond did well to cut out Daniel Nkrumah’s hard, low pull-back.
Alfa twisted and turned to create another shooting chance from the edge of the area, but again McKenzie-Lyle got down well to save just inside the near post. At the other end, Ezennolim shot just wide of the near post after chopping back well to give himself the opportunity.
Ezennolim then showed his value at the other end as Aldershot moved it well and it came out to Amaluzor. However, the Welling full back made an excellent block causing it to loop up into the arms of McKenzie-Lyle.
Inih Effiong had the last goal attempt of the half, but he shot well wide from distance.
Efforts from well outside the area continued after the interval with Payne wide at one end and Harrison Panayiotou and Effiong high over at the other.
Giles Phillips earned himself a caution for an agricultural challenge on Nkrumah and was almost punished further when Taylor Maloney’s free kick came back out off the bar.
That appeared to stir Aldershot and McKenzie-Lyle did well to hold a Panayiotou header before the hosts went ahead. Ollie Harfield found space to cross and veteran striker Effiong met it with a glancing header just inside the far post.
Joe Partington struck a free kick wide before McKenzie-Lyle made a brilliant point-blank range save from Panayiotou.
Maloney shot over for Welling from Kassarate’s pull back and Nkrumah burst through but got the ball stuck between his feet when about to pull the trigger.
As Welling continued to push, they left themselves open at the back and after Effiong had a shot deflected wide, Glover was well off target when well placed.
He atoned for that miss with one minute remaining when meeting a Harfield near post corner and powering home a header. Insult was added to injury when in the final minute of injury time Aldershot scored again.
Effiong found Ben De Lacy-Turner with a cross, and his side-footed shot went in off the far post.
