Two teams with no points in 2015 came into the game desperate to claim the three points needed to kick-start their attempts to move away from the Vanarama Conference drop zone.
For the first 45 minutes, Welling United far outplayed hosts Aldershot Town but having recovered from going behind, they suffered again when conceding a needless late winner.
In the early stages it appeared to be a question of how many Welling would score.
Zach Fagan had a shot beaten out by Phil Smith before the Shots’ keeper made a fantastic double save to keep the scores level.
First, Dominic Vose hit a tremendous shot that Smith did well to keep out. Jason Williams followed up and drew Smith out however he recovered well to claim off the feet off Vose as he closed in.
Jim Stevenson shot well wide for Aldershot on a rare break but Welling continued to control the first period.
Against the run of play, Aldershot went ahead. Their first corner of the match wasn’t cleared properly and Stevenson appeared to know little about it as his header drifted just inside the post.
It looked as though Welling were going to in behind at the break but Vose had other ideas. He made himself space on the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a shot that gave Smith no chance.
At half time, Aldershot made a change with Joe Oastler withdrawn for Tristan Plummer.
Vose combined well with Reece Harris but good defending blocked them out then Brett Williams broke away but fired well over.
Jonathan Henly then made a great save from Stevenson before Welling came close to going ahead.
Once again, Vose was the architect of an attack. He went past one challenge after another but could not find the space to get his shot away. Instead, he picked out his former Colchester United team-mate Karl Duguid, and the midfielder sent in a shot that flew back off the post.
Twenty minutes remained when the Shots made another inspired change when bringing on Ryan Jarvis for Williams who had got nothing out of Chris Bush and Darren Purse.
Jarvis came close in the closing minutes when his shot was deflected just wide however Bush conceded a penalty in injury time to give him a second chance.
Although far from convincing, his spot kick got past Henly for the Shots’ winner.
