Scoring the late equaliser against Peterborough on Tuesday was probably the highlight of Karlan Ahearne-Grant’s‎ career so far.

And it nearly got even better, the young striker was a whisker away from getting on the end of Jay Dasilva’s driven cross, which would have won the game for the Addicks.

Ahearne-Grant is still only 20, though he seems to have been around forever. He made his debut as a 17-year-old at Norwich as long ago as September 2014.

His best season to date was probably the 2015/16 campaign when he scored his first senior goals for the club.

He netted against Dagenham & Redbridge in the 4-1 Capital One Cup win at The Valley, and converted a penalty against Peterborough in the same competition a few weeks later. That was the game where Ahmed Kashi scored from near the halfway line.

He also scored Charlton’s consolation goal in the Championship match‎ at Cardiff that season.

A prolific scorer at youth team level,‎ Ahearne-Grant has struggled to make the transition to senior level, despite his undoubted talent.

His style is not ideally suited to Karl Robinson’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, where he has mainly been used as a wide player. But the acquisition of Leon Best may help his cause.

Robinson started with Best up front and Josh Magennis wide left against‎ Peterborough, but switched to 4-4-2 during te game.

This shape could open the door to Ahearne-Grant getting‎ more opportunities. Robinson believes in his ability and said this after the game:

“I’m so happy for him (Ahearne-Grant). I’ve kept persevering with him. I’ve kept trying him and sometimes people question that. I do see something in the young man.

“I’m not frightened to put young players on. You see Anfernee Dijksteel, you see Karlan, you see Joe Aribo, our three substitutions tonight were from our great academy.

“A big testament and a big thankyou needs to go to Steve Avory and his staff. When we are low on numbers, like we are with seven in the treatment room. When you have to turn to these young players who have a great future at this football club.

“Joe came on and made a difference, Karlan made a difference and I though Anfernee Dijksteel made a big difference as well.”

The Addicks go to AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup on Sunday, and then travel to Swansea for a Checkatrade ‎Trophy match two days later.

All the youngsters Robinson mentioned will be involved in these games. He is also hopeful that Lewis Page, Jason Pearce and Harry Lennon will be available for the game at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday.
