The Addicks head to Kingsmeadow to face AFC Wimbledon in the Second Round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
Karl Robinson is keen to get through and get a plum tie in the Third Round. But does he have grounds for optimism?
Charlton are one of the bigger names in League One, and as might be expected, they have a decent record at this stage of the competition.
The Addicks touched their nadir in the 2009/10 season when they did not even reach rhe Second Round.
A single goal eliminated them at Northwich Victoria – the only time the club has lost to a non-league side since joining the Football League in 1921.
The following season they reached the Second Round after edging past Barnet. After a 0-0 draw at Underhill, an early Kyel Reid goal in the replay at The Valley, set up a Second Round home tie with Luton.
Joe Anyinsah and Johnnie Jackson were the scorers in a 2-2 draw, but Charlton came from behind to win the replay 3-1 at Kenilworth Road. Scott Wagstaff, Anyinsah and Jackson getting the goals.
They went out at White Hart Lane in the Third Round, Tottenham easing to a comfortable 3-0 win.
In the 2011/12 promotion winning season, the Addicks started their Cup campaign in the fog at Halifax.
The game was televised but Chris Powell’s side made no mistake; goals from Matt Taylor, Jackson, Danny Hollands and Bradley Pritchard setting up a Second Round clash with Carlisle at The Valley.
Michael Morrison and Jason Euell got the goals that knocked the Cumbrians out.
Charlton were again paired with a London Premier League side in the Third Round. This time it was Fulham and 7,000 travelling fans saw the Addicks lose 4-0 at Craven Cottage.
In one of football’s regular ironies, Karl Robinson’s first game in charge at The Valley, was against his former club, MK Dons.
Charlton had beaten high flying Scunthorpe 3-1 in the First Round at The Valley thanks to two goals from Ademola Lookman, and another from Jackson.
A dull 0-0 draw sent Robinson back to his former stomping ground for the replay.
Former Dons player Adam Chicksen cancelled out Daniel Powell’s early opener to take the game into extra-time. The home side proved too strong for the visitors and ran out 3-1 winners. Ben Reeves and Dean Bowditch getting the goals.
So recent history suggests that if the Addicks can get past the Wombles, Robinson could well get his dream of playing a Premier League club in the next round.
